In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the region. Key events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
