This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
